Web development in Kansas City: what to look for before you hire

How to evaluate a web development partner in the KC metro, what questions to ask, and the red flags that cost owners months and budget.

The questions that reveal how a shop actually works

Before talking price, ask about process. A shop that cannot answer these clearly is telling you something:

How often will I see the work in progress? The right answer is weekly, with a live URL you can check any time. Any answer involving "we show you the final product" should send you elsewhere.

Who is actually building the site? Some agencies sell locally and build offshore through undisclosed partners. Some have a team of three people and one of them is mostly in sales. Know who is holding the keyboard before you sign.

What happens after launch? Maintenance, hosting, updates, security patches. Who handles them, what is the SLA, and what does it cost? Most of the real cost in a website relationship happens post-launch.

Can I see a site you built in the last six months and talk to the owner? If they cannot produce a reference from recent work, that is the answer.

What a realistic budget looks like in 2026

For a Kansas City small business, a marketing site with five to eight pages, solid performance, and proper SEO foundation runs between $5,000 and $15,000 depending on complexity. E-commerce adds significantly. Custom integrations add more.

Anything quoted below $3,000 for a complete marketing site is almost always a template with your logo swapped in and your copy pasted over. Templates are fine if that is what you need, but know that is what you are getting.

Anything quoted above $25,000 for a standard marketing site without a clear explanation of what justifies that cost is worth questioning.

What actually determines whether the site grows your business

The design matters less than most owners think. The copy matters more. A site with clear, specific language about what you do, who you do it for, and what happens next will outperform a beautiful site with vague value propositions every time.

Local SEO is the third piece that most web developers skip.
